The Cardinals were in town last weekend, and by Friday, I had tickets to all three games…. not that I meant to, but there was alumni day, friend’s work day, and friend’s birthday game. And the cards won all three. The few times I went to get some beverage and food, the Cards hit home runs. There are all sorts of superstitious tenets I could extract from this experience… instead, I’ll just say its actually quite fun to spend a weekend at the ballpark, even dealing with Dodger Stadium’s silly parking situation.
We did encounter some dodgers fans, strolling to their seats ahead of us in the 3rd inning, who questioned our attendance (”You’re gonna wear the other team’s clothes in OUR stadium??”) They proceeded to throw some food at us, and called one woman in our party a slut. When someone told her to fuck off, she said “Oh, now you’re gonna use the F-BOMB??” Apparently slut is just casual banter.
Oh, and apparently Foodie Universe was at yesterday’s game, and she didn’t even say hello. What a slut!

I’ve been quite active on the concert front, lately. Radiohead played up the street at the fabulous Greek Theatre, but I couldn’t get tickets online and didn’t feel like scalping them. Plus, they would’ve gone for four times the face value.
The shins and Belle & Sebastian put on a show at the Hollywood Bowl. B&S were backed by the LA Phil, which seemed like a good idea, but ended up being underwhelming. They’re already a 9 piece and feature a celloist, pianist, and violinist. Adding an orchestra certainly amplified this secton of the band, but was unnecessary. There were only a handful of songs that really were enhanced by the presecence of the Phil. The Shins, on the other hand, rocked the house with their 4 piece. They sped up the “Song that Will Change Your Life” (i.e. from Garden state), and generally presented different incarnations of their material live. Even from my seats in the 3rd to last row of the gigantic Bowl, I was drawn into the show.
Damien Rice and Fiona Apple performed at the Greek in late June, and are another example of the opener (Damien) putting on a superior show to the headliner. In Fiona’s defense, she may be recovering from a bout of pneumonia, or perhaps her years as a adolescent star accelerated her development of emphysema. She sounded pretty terrible, is what I’m saying. The band performed capably, and her piano talent was spotlighted, but her voice sounded like she had been drinking Jack instead of OJ all week. Damien’s performance was much better. i was surprised that the folks sitting around me had come just for Mr. Rice.
Upcoming concerts: Flaming Lips and Thievery Corp together this Sunday. Will *you* be there?

Interesting article about paruresis, a social anxiety disorder that prevents people from excreting in the vicinity of others (in a bathroom, of course, though they likely would be unable to defecate in public, either).
White is one of about 17 million people nationwide who are unable to use the toilet in close proximity with others or when they are under time pressure, being observed or traveling on moving vehicles.
The condition is also called Shy Bladder and Bashful Bladder.

So… i guess to provide an update, I should point out that I am not in fact moving to Boston. It was quite an agonizing decision, but I’m gonna keep on keep on’ing in LA, in a slightly new role. Should be fun, though we’ll see. As a negative, I gotta move from Los Feliz to be closer to work, which is the South Bay. I don’t know anyone there yet, but it’ll be interesting. I wish I could stay in Los Feliz, its where the music and et. al is at, and I like living by hills. I have actually never really wanted to live by the beach, but now I will, and now you all have to visit me!
