my 1995 space

Posted in shit that sucks [rants and raves] at 10:12 pm by shawnz

back when i was in high school, i messed around some HTML in the early days of the web, throwing up this shitty webzine that i thought would really take off. i made some crappy buttons in photoshop and made a background tile.  unfortunately, the tiles didn’t quite mesh when you, well, tiled them, so it looked quite shitty, as did everything else on the website.  people made frames, and you had to scroll up and down and left and write just to read a sentence. it was exciting all the same, but web technology has sure evolved a lot over the past decade.

and then along came myspace, and here we are, back in 1995.  the combination of terrible backgrounds, poor layouts, and a scatterfuck of tables, myspace has to be the most unreadable web design i’ve seen since, well, 1995. i suppose it is empowering for 15 year olds everywhere to upload their own content and make their own space (hell, it was for me a decade ago), but shit, there is so much out-of-the-box software around the web that makes for much better websites. websites where you can actually read text and find the photo you want to find.  these websites are called blogger and flickr and they’re free and easy! and no log-ins required, and you don’t have all these weird-o fake web cam accounts.  okay, there is some spam, but there are less pedofile predators. i think!

the utilitarian principle of mass transit

Posted in mass transit in LA at 2:32 pm by shawnz

lawa (los angeles worldwide airports) announced their remote bag check-in program this week.  that means that you essentially check in your bags at a shuttle stop, and then board a shuttle and wait in line for security check, by passing the luggage check-in lines.  brilliant idea, especially since you can’t carry shampoo on the plane anymore (i concede, the terrorists have finally won, now that they’ve severly inconvenienced by travel style).  this plan not only will encourage more folks to use these FlyAway shuttles (which leave from Van Nuys and Union Station in downtown), but will also make travel more efficient for passengers and airlines (presumbly, unless they fuck it up).

they should take this plan further and make shuttle/bus only lanes on the highway to make these flyaway shuttles the truly desirable option over driving.  this way, the shuttle is faster, cheaper than paying for parking at the airport, and an all-around good value. one problem with the fly-away shuttles is that they have to go to each terminal to pick up passengers, which can add 20 minutes to your trip.  making up for that time on the highway would counteract this time wasted.  these bus/shuttle routes would help every single commuter and bus line in LA be more attractive to the car-addicted LA citizens.
